Smash: The Musical is taking another major step to bring the magic of the small screen to the grand stage with an upcoming workshop with a full orchestra and choreography.
Following a reading in Fall 2023, the cast and crew will now conduct a six-week workshop under the Direction of Susan Stroman with Choreography by Josh Bergasse. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray), who wrote the songs for the hit television series, will pen the score. The book for Smash: The Broadway Musical is by the comedy writers, Rick Elice (Jersey Boys) and Bob Martin (The Prom).
The workshop cast includes Brooks Ashmanskas (The Prom), Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice), Yvette Nicole Brown (TV’s Community), Bella Coppola (Six), newcomer Nihar Duvvuri, Casey Garvin (Some Like it Hot), Robyn Hurder (Moulin Rouge), Kristine Nielsen (Vayna and Sonia and Masha and Spike), Krysta Rodriguez (Into the Woods) and Jonalyn Saxer (Back to the Future).
The full company includes Wendi Bergamini, Giovanni Bonaventura, Jim Borstelmann, Zachary Downer, Tiffany Engen, Ashley Blair Fitzgerald, Megan Kane, Caleb Marshall-Villarreal, Connor McRory, JJ Niemann, Tanairi Sade Vazquez, Brian Shepard, Sarah Sigman, Jake Trammel and Katie Webber.
This developmental workshop will conclude with five performances for recruited audiences, allowing the creative team to gather feedback from real theatergoers and refine the show's performance ahead of a Broadway opening targeted for the 2024-25 season.
