“Touching mixture of dance and song and character”

“Excuse this Starbuck's posturing, his slightly dated book. For by the end, there was water pouring onstage, as the character promised, and there was enthusiastic and sustained applause in the audience, as this production deserves: it was one of the best attempts at bringing Broadway musical theater to life that I have seen at the City Opera. It didn't make the case that this was a greatly neglected classic or that its songs deserved a long and independent life: it was just an entertaining, polished, sometimes touching mixture of dance and song and character. But that is not an inconsiderable achievement.”
