For by the end, there was water pouring onstage, as the character promised, and there was enthusiastic and sustained applause in the audience, as this production deserves: it was one of the best attempts at bringing Broadway musical theater to life that I have seen at the City Opera. It didn't make the case that this was a greatly neglected classic or that its songs deserved a long and independent life: it was just an entertaining, polished, sometimes touching mixture of dance and song and character. But that is not an inconsiderable achievement.”
